Lobby John Healey and David Lammy to change Labours spending priorities

As the Labour Party gathers in Liverpool for what may be the last Party Conference before the General Election, join Labour CND in calling for a change in spending priorities to fund wages for the many not weapons.

After the economic chaos brought on the country by the disastrous policies of Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak has failed to address the challenges of soaring inflation and the Cost of Living Crisis which is pushing so many people in our communities into poverty. Strikes have been taking place throughout the past two years, with railway workers, university lectures, doctors, nurses and many others seeking pay restoration after 13 years of crushing austerity.

People are crying out for something different. A change from the way politics has been run for the past years. This is the chance for Labour to be radical and set out clear spending priorities which will benefit society.

Now is the time to invest in the people who deliver services we all rely on, rather than more spending on weapons. Nuclear weapons are only part of the issue, but with the replacement of Trident set to cost well in excess of £205 billion, scrapping that would be a good start.

With the next General Election on the horizon, I am writing to urge you to change Labour’s spending priorities away from the military and weapons to investing in the wages of those who provide the public services on which we all rely.
After the past 13 years of failed austerity, exacerbated by the economic catastrophe visited on us by Liz Truss and continued under Rishi Sunak, people are crying out for a pay rise which will enable them to live, not just survive. Inflation has been taking money out of peoples pockets while the Conservatives have been lining the pockets of the arms manufacturers.
The Conservatives have proved that they are incapable of running the economy and people are crying out for a different way of doing politics. That means ensuring that railway workers, doctors, university lectures, nurses, and everyone else working to deliver public services has their wages restored from the past decade lost to ideological austerity.
Jeremy Hunt’s Spring Budget this year saw £11 billion more military spending, while offering no solutions for the problems we face. The industrial disputes which continue today will not be solved by more spending on nuclear weapons, nor will our communities benefit from more spending on bombs.
Cutting spending on the military and weapons, would enable Labour to offer pay settlements to these workers which give both dignity now and hope for the future. Continuing to spend billions of pounds every year on military hardware while use of foodbanks continues to grow is morally indefensible.
Labour has the chance to present a real alternative to the Conservatives. Rejecting the ever-increasing spending on weapons and pledging to reduce military spending from current levels would free up billions of pounds to tackle the challenges we face in Britain.
I hope you will rethink the spending priorities of a future Labour Government and fund wages not weapons.
